Progressive Rock

Progressive rock, blues, and experimental material from the mid-1980s Denver scene.

The Story

United World started as just two people: Ray Laucella (known as "Biff") and Robert Vernon. They met through a mutual friend, Pat Murphy — a phenomenal guitarist and synth player from Colorado Springs who has since passed away. Robert was eighteen at the time.

The two worked on several projects together over the years — blues, rock — before forming United World in the mid-1980s. Biff played eight-string and four-string Hagstrom bass, synthesizer, Rhodes, guitar, and Taurus bass pedals, and sang. Robert has described him simply as an amazing musician.

They wrote and recorded everything in Biff's basement in the Cherry Creek area of Denver, tracking to a four-track cassette player. Robert would stop by on his way home from work, and the two played together nearly every day. A live recording from one of their shows together became the basis for a number of the songs.

Robert has since reconnected with Ray, who is doing well, and the two have decided to clean up and release the old recordings — with hopes for new material down the line.
